What people actually think, which is more sceptical and more nuanced than either the enthusiasm of the industry or the alarm of its critics. Surveys consistently find people see specific benefits, worry about specific harms, want regulation, and trust institutions to handle it less than they trust the technology itself.
Technical view
Cross-national surveys show consistent patterns: majority support for regulation, higher acceptance for tightly scoped applications such as diagnosis support than for open-ended decision-making about people, marked differences between countries with generally higher optimism in Asian markets, and low trust in both companies and governments to manage the technology. Trust responds to demonstrated reliability and to redress mechanisms more than to explanation, which has direct product implications.
