United Kingdom Regulatory Approach

Also called: UK AI Regulation

The United Kingdom has taken a different route from the European Union: rather than one comprehensive statute, it has set out cross-cutting principles and asked existing regulators to apply them within their own domains. That means the answer to what applies to you depends on who regulates your sector.

Technical view

The framework rests on principles covering safety and robustness, transparency and explainability, fairness, accountability and governance, and contestability and redress, implemented through existing regulators including the data protection authority, the financial and medicines regulators and the competition authority, supported by central coordination and an assurance ecosystem. Organisations operating in both jurisdictions generally find that meeting European Union requirements satisfies the United Kingdom position, but not the reverse.
